The trick with all plants is that if the plant root ball is very small do NOT plant it in a Very large pot. The reverse of that statement is also true.
A pot of about 1 – 1 1/2 times bigger then the root ball would be sufficient.
Basically plant the basil so that the original planting height (where the dirt meets the stem of the plant) remains the same.
Rule of (my) thumb is put about 1 – 1.5 inches of good commercial potting mix in the bottom of the pot. Then loosen the bottom roots slightly or if the pot is root bound (encircled roots that almost look like a pot itself) cut off about 1/4 inch of the root mass and run the knife blade along the side of the root bound plant, severing the side roots. Then plant in the pot, filling sides with good commercial potting mix.
The severed roots on the bottom and the sides will force the plant to produce more roots and give the plant a better chance of living.
I also recommend a potting mix like Miracle-Gro that has time release fertilizer in the mix already. No need to fertilize at all.

If you're going with green, most likely a lime green color…something more vibrant than a darker, more subdued shade of green. Purple would also work.
You could try getting some paint color samples from Home Depot (or another similar store) and place them with your bedding and see what jumps out at you.
